Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Kettleman City CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Kettleman City CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Kettleman City CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Kettleman City CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Kettleman City CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Kettleman City CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Kettleman City home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Kettleman City CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kettleman City CA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Kettleman City CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Kettleman City CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Kettleman City health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Kettleman City CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Kettleman City CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
