Most work in La Habra CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

La Habra CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with La Habra CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in La Habra CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local La Habra CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your La Habra home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask La Habra CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the La Habra CA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of La Habra CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have associations with La Habra CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the La Habra medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their La Habra CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the La Habra CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
