Sonogram Tech Work Summary

La Salle CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in La Salle CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

La Salle CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with La Salle CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local La Salle CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your La Salle home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many La Salle CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have partnerships with La Salle CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their La Salle CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the La Salle CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
