Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Larkspur CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Larkspur CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Larkspur CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Larkspur CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Larkspur home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any sonographer program you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Larkspur CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Larkspur CA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Larkspur CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have relationships with Larkspur CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Larkspur healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Larkspur CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Larkspur CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
