Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Livingston CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Livingston CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Livingston CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Livingston CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Livingston CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Livingston CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Livingston home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Livingston CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Livingston CA area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Livingston CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Livingston CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Livingston healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Livingston CA residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Livingston CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

Livingston's total area is 3.7 square miles (9.6 km2), including undeveloped farmland annexed in anticipation of future growth.
