Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Lodi CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Lodi CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Lodi CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Lodi CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lodi CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lodi CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Lodi home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lodi CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Lodi CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Lodi CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Lodi CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Lodi medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Lodi CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lodi CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Lodi, California

Lodi (/ˈloʊdaɪ/ LOH-dye) is a city located in San Joaquin County, California, in the northern portion of California's Central Valley. The population was 62,134 at the 2010 census. Its estimated population as of July 1, 2013 was 64,338.[8]

Lodi is best known for being a center of winegrape production (the "Zinfandel Capital of the World"),[10] although its vintages have traditionally been less prestigious than those of Sonoma and Napa counties. However, in recent years, the Lodi Appellation has become increasingly respected for its Zinfandel and other eclectic wine varietals, along with its focus on sustainability under the Lodi Rules program.[11] National recognition came from the Creedence Clearwater Revival song "Lodi" and continues with the "2015 Wine Region of the Year" award given to Lodi by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.[12] Nearby Woodbridge is the home of the well-known winery Woodbridge by Robert Mondavi. Mondavi grew up in Lodi, and Mondavi Winery is considered[by whom?] one of the most influential in the American wine industry.

When a group of local families decided to establish a school in 1859, they settled on a site near present-day Cherokee Lane and Turner Road. In 1869, the Central Pacific Railroad was in the process of creating a new route, and pioneer settlers Ezekiel Lawrence, Reuben Wardrobe, A.C. Ayers and John Magley offered a townsite of 160 acres (0.65 km2) to the railroad as an incentive to build a station there. The railroad received a "railroad reserve" of 12 acres (49,000 m2) in the middle of town, and surveyors began laying out streets in the area between Washington to Church and Locust to Walnut. Settlers flocked from nearby Woodbridge, Liberty City, and Galt, including town founders John M. Burt and Dan Crist.[13]
