Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Loomis CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Loomis CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Loomis CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Loomis CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Loomis CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Loomis CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Loomis home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Loomis CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Loomis CA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Loomis CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Loomis CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Loomis medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Loomis CA home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Loomis CA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Loomis, California

Loomis (formerly, Pine,[5]Pino,[5]Smithville,[7] and Placer[7]) is an incorporated town in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 6,733 as estimated by the US Census in 2015.[8]

The Placer post office opened on the site in 1861, changed its name to Smithville in 1862, then changed it to Pino in 1869, and in 1890 the Southern Pacific Railroad finally decided on Loomis.[7] The railroad and Post Office found that Pino was confused with the town of Reno, hence the name change to Loomis.[9] The name Smithville honors L.G. Smith, who was one of the town's most prominent leaders.[7]

Loomis takes its name from one of the town's pioneers, James Loomis. At one time, James Loomis was the whole town—saloon keeper, railroad agent, express agent, and postmaster.[7] In the early part of the 20th century, Loomis was the second largest fruit-shipping station in Placer County, Newcastle California, just 6 mi (9.7 km) east of Loomis, was considered the largest.[10]
