Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Lynwood CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lynwood CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Lynwood CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Lynwood CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Lynwood CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Lynwood CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Lynwood home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Lynwood CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lynwood CA area. Clearly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lynwood CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Lynwood CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Lynwood medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Lynwood CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lynwood CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
