To begin with, you have to find the ideal program that will furnish the appropriate training to become a qualified professional. And since some states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing exam. So it’s very important that you investigate each college so that you can assess and compare your alternatives. But just where does one begin? Many potential students will start by searching for schools that are within travelling distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Of course location and cost need to be considered when arriving at a decision, but there are other significant factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they offer internship programs. These and other qualifiers will be covered more in depth later in this article. Sonographer Occupation Description

Maricopa CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Maricopa CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Maricopa CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Maricopa CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Maricopa CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Maricopa CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Maricopa home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Maricopa CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Maricopa CA area. Naturally location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Maricopa CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Maricopa CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Maricopa healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Maricopa CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Maricopa CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
