Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Marina CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Marina CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Marina CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Marina CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Marina CAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Marina CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Marina home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Marina CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Marina CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Marina CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Marina medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Marina CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Marina CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
