Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Moorpark CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Moorpark CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Moorpark CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Moorpark CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Moorpark CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Moorpark CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Moorpark home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Moorpark CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Moorpark CA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Moorpark CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Moorpark CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Moorpark health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Moorpark CA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Moorpark CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Moorpark, California

Moorpark is a city in Ventura County in Southern California. Moorpark was founded in 1900 when the application for the Moorpark Post Office was approved and Inocencio C. Villegas was named Moorpark's first postmaster on August 8 of that year. The townsite of Moorpark was owned and surveyed by Robert W. Poindexter and his wife, Madeline. As of 2006, Moorpark was one of the fastest-growing cities in Ventura County.[12] The town grew from just over 4,000 citizens in 1980 to over 25,000 citizens by 1990. The population was 34,421 at the 2010 census, up from 31,415 at the 2000 census.

The origin of the name "Moorpark" is unknown, but several sources have been suggested. Of these most sources agree that its origin was Admiral Lord Anson's estate Moor Park in Hertfordshire, England where he introduced the apricot in 1688.[13][14][15]

One other theory of the name is that when the Southern Pacific Railroad was surveying the local land in the 19th century for its railway, someone in the party said that the area, with its sloping hills, looked like the Scottish Moors. Hence the name Moorpark.
