Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Mount Hermon CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Mount Hermon CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Mount Hermon CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Mount Hermon CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Mount Hermon CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Mount Hermon CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Mount Hermon home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mount Hermon CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mount Hermon CA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Mount Hermon CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Mount Hermon CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Mount Hermon medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Mount Hermon CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Mount Hermon CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Mount Hermon, California

Mount Hermon, known as "Tuxedo Junction" prior to 1906, was a stop on the South Coast Pacific Railroad from Alameda to Santa Cruz.[3] Hotel Tuxedo was on the property; the hotel was purchased and renamed the Zayante Inn on April 14, 1906, by a group which later became the Mount Hermon Association, Inc. Five ladies of the group were entrusted with the selection of a new name for the area, and they choose that of the peak in the Holy Land.[4] The land was to be used as a Christian retreat center, whose dedication day, known as "The Great Day", was July 22, 1906; the event was held at the Zayante Inn with 1400 people in attendance. Speaking at the dedication was Dr. Reuben A. Torrey, President of the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois.

The Zayante Inn and surrounding cottages were destroyed by fire on April 18, 1921. At the site, the Mount Hermon Christian Conference Center, with three separate facilities, operates on much of the original property. There are also several hundred privately owned homes, the Mount Hermon post office, and a bookstore.

The 2010 United States Census[5] reported that Mount Hermon had a population of 1,037. The population density was 1,166.3 people per square mile (450.3/kmĀ²). The racial makeup of Mount Hermon was 964 (93.0%) White, 6 (0.6%) African American, 3 (0.3%) Native American, 14 (1.4%) Asian, 1 (0.1%) Pacific Islander, 18 (1.7%) from other races, and 31 (3.0%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 83 persons (8.0%).
