Sonogram Tech Job Description

Mount Wilson CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mount Wilson CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Mount Wilson CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Mount Wilson CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonographer Programs

student attending online sonography class in Mount Wilson CAAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Mount Wilson CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Mount Wilson home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Mount Wilson CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Mount Wilson CA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mount Wilson CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with Mount Wilson CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional connections in the Mount Wilson medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Mount Wilson CA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Mount Wilson CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Mount Wilson (California)

Mount Wilson is a peak in the San Gabriel Mountains, located within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and Angeles National Forest in Los Angeles County, California. With only minor topographical prominence the peak is not naturally noticeable from a distance, although it is easily identifiable due to the large number of antennas near its summit. It is a subsidiary peak of nearby San Gabriel Peak.

It is the location of the Mount Wilson Observatory, which is an important astronomical facility in Southern California with historic 60-inch (1,524 mm) and 100-inch (2,540 mm) telescopes, and 60-foot (18.3 m) and 150-foot (45.7 m) solar towers. The newer CHARA Array, run by Georgia State University, is also sited there and does important interferometric stellar research.

The summit is at 5,710 feet (1,740 m). While not the tallest peak in its vicinity, it is high enough in elevation that snow can sometimes interrupt astronomical activities on the mountain. All of the mountains south of the summit are far shorter leading to unobstructed views across the Los Angeles Basin, Orange County, the Inland Empire, and out to Ventura County, San Diego County and the Pacific Ocean. On most days Santa Catalina Island, California, some 65 miles south, is visible. On clear days, other Channel Islands visible include San Clemente Island at 95 miles, Santa Barbara Island at 76 miles, San Nicolas Island at 107 miles, Santa Cruz Island at 98 miles and San Miguel Island at 133 miles. At an elevation of 5,710 feet, the horizon on the ocean extends 92 miles.
