Newman CA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have made a decision to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Newman CA, the next step is to begin the process of choosing a school. First, you must find the ideal program that will provide the necessary instruction to become a skilled professional. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? A number of prospective students will start by searching for colleges that are within driving distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Naturally location and cost must be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For instance, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they provide internship programs. These and additional qualifiers will be discussed more in depth later in this article. But to start with, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the degrees and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Tech Work Summary

Newman CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Newman CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Newman CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Newman CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Newman CAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Newman CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Newman home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Newman CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Newman CA area. Of course location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Newman CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have relationships with Newman CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates form professional relationships in the Newman healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Newman CA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Newman CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
