Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Oak Park CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Oak Park CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Oak Park CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Oak Park CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Oak Park CAAs previously mentioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Oak Park CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Oak Park home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Oak Park CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Oak Park CA area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Oak Park CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Oak Park CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Oak Park medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Oak Park CA residence. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Oak Park CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Oak Park, California

Oak Park is an unincorporated community in Ventura County, California, United States. When developed in the Simi Hills in the late 1960s, a single road provided the only access to the community from Agoura Hills, California, in neighboring Los Angeles County. As of the 2010 census, Oak Park had a population of 14,266, down from 14,625 at the 2000 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Oak Park as a census-designated place (CDP). The census definition of the area may not precisely correspond to local understanding of the area with the same name.

Oak Park is the biggest unincorporated community in Ventura County. Residents of the community have through votes declined to set up an independent city, and also declined to be annexed into neighboring Thousand Oaks.[3]

Oak Park has had human occupation from about 5500 B.C. to the present day. It lies within a zone including the early Millingstone Horizon and inland Chumash Indians. Indians camped throughout the area as they collected acorns, yucca, and other food. The sites in the area include major villages, smaller camps and several rock shelters.[4] Chumash people lived here for thousands of years prior to European contact. They lived off of trading, gathering and hunting. The Chumash originally settled in Oak Park due to an abundance of natural resources, including fresh water, acorns and rabbit-hunting.[5] It is one of the oldest occupied places in California.[6]
