Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Orange CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Orange CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Orange CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize with Orange CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Orange CAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Orange CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Orange home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Orange CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Orange CA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Orange CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have associations with Orange CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Orange healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Orange CA home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Orange CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

In addition to meeting academic standards, you need to be in at least fairly good physical condition, able to stand for lengthy durations and able to routinely lift weights of 50 pounds or more, as is it typically necessary to position patients and move heavy machines. Other preferred skills include technical aptitude, the ability to keep calm when confronted by an anxious or angry patient and the ability to communicate in a clear and compassionate manner. Orange, California

Orange is a city located in Orange County, California. It is approximately 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) north of the county seat, Santa Ana. Orange is unusual in this region because many of the homes in its Old Town District were built before 1920. While many other cities in the region demolished such houses in the 1960s, Orange decided to preserve them. The small city of Villa Park is surrounded by the city of Orange. The population was 139,812 as of 2014.[8]

Members of the Tongva and Juaneño/Luiseño ethnic group long inhabited this area. After the 1769 expedition of Gaspar de Portolá, an expedition out of San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico, led by Father Junípero Serra, named the area Vallejo de Santa Ana (Valley of Saint Anne). On November 1, 1776, Mission San Juan Capistrano became the area's first permanent European settlement in Alta California, New Spain.[citation needed]

In 1801, the Spanish Empire granted 62,500 acres (253 km2) to José Antonio Yorba, which he named Rancho San Antonio. Yorba's great rancho included the lands where the cities of Olive, Orange, Villa Park, Santa Ana, Tustin, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach stand today. Smaller ranchos evolved from this large rancho, including the Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana.
