Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Paso Robles CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Paso Robles CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Paso Robles CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up with Paso Robles CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Paso Robles CAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Paso Robles CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Paso Robles home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Paso Robles CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Paso Robles CA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Paso Robles CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Paso Robles CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Paso Robles healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their Paso Robles CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Paso Robles CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Paso Robles, California

Paso Robles (/ˌpæsə ˈroʊbʊlz/ PASS-oh ROH-buulz; full name: El Paso de Robles "The Pass of the Oaks"; Obispeño: elewexe, "Swordfish" [10]) is a city in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. Located on the Salinas River north of San Luis Obispo, California, the city is known for its hot springs, its abundance of wineries, its production of olive oil, almond orchards, and for playing host to the California Mid-State Fair.

This area of the Central Coast, known as the City of El Paso De Robles, Paso Robles, or simply "Paso",[11] is known for its thermal springs.[11] Native Americans lived in the area thousands of years even before the mission era. They knew this area as the “Springs” or the “Hot Springs.”[12]

Paso Robles is located on the Rancho Paso de Robles Mexican land grant that was purchased by James and Daniel Blackburn in 1857.[12] Their partner was Drury James of Kentucky, a veteran of the Mexican War and uncle of the outlaw Jesse James.[12] The land was a rest-stop for travelers of the Camino Real trail, and was known for its mineral hot springs. In fact, Franciscan priests from neighboring Mission San Miguel constructed the first mineral baths in the area. During this period, Paso Robles began to attract the pioneer settlers who would become the founding members of the community. They would later establish cattle ranches, apple and almond orchards, dairy farms, and vineyards.
