Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Patterson CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Patterson CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Patterson CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Patterson CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Patterson CAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Patterson CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Patterson home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Patterson CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Patterson CA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Patterson CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are interested in have associations with Patterson CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Patterson health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Patterson CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Patterson CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
