Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Pinon Hills CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Pinon Hills CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Pinon Hills CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Pinon Hills CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Pinon Hills CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Pinon Hills CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Pinon Hills home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are considering, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Pinon Hills CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Pinon Hills CA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Pinon Hills CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Pinon Hills CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Pinon Hills medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Pinon Hills CA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Pinon Hills CA area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
