Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Redding CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Redding CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Redding CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Redding CA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Redding CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Redding CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Redding home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are reviewing, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Redding CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Redding CA area. Of course location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Redding CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Redding CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Redding healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Redding CA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Redding CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.

    Redding, California

Redding is a city in and the county seat of Shasta County, California, United States, in the northern part of the state. It lies along the Sacramento River, 162 miles (261 kilometers) north of Sacramento, and 120 miles (190 km) south of California's northern border, shared with the state of Oregon. Interstate 5 bisects the entire city, from the south to north before it approaches Shasta Lake, which is located 15 miles (24 km) to the north. The 2010 population was 89,861.[5][6] Redding is the largest city in the Shasta Cascade region, and it is the sixth-largest city in the Sacramento Valley, behind Sacramento, Elk Grove, Roseville, Vacaville and Chico.

During the gold rush, the area that now comprises Redding was called Poverty Flats. In 1868 the first land agent for the Central Pacific Railroad, a former Sacramento politician named Benjamin Bernard Redding, bought property in Poverty Flats on behalf of the railroad so that it could build a northern terminus there. In the process of building the terminus, the railroad also built a town in the same area, which they named Redding in honor of Benjamin Redding. In 1874 there was a dispute over the name by local legislators and it was changed for a time to Reading, in order to honor Pierson B. Reading, who founded the community of Shasta, but the name was officially changed back to Redding by 1880. It has been called Redding ever since.[7]

Although Europeans had been to California as early as 1542, when Juan Cabrillo sailed to what is now the San Diego Bay, the indigenous Indians were probably the only inhabitants of far Northern California region until Russian fur trappers came through the area in 1815.
