Sonographer Occupation Description

Ross CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Ross CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Ross CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up with Ross CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Ross CAAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Ross CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Ross home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Ross CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ross CA area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Ross CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have associations with Ross CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Ross medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Ross CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ross CA area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
