Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Shafter CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Shafter CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Shafter CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Shafter CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Shafter CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Shafter home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Shafter CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Shafter CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Shafter CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Shafter CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Shafter medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Shafter CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shafter CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
