Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Shoshone CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Shoshone CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Shoshone CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Shoshone CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Shoshone CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Shoshone CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Shoshone home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are often less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Shoshone CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Shoshone CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Shoshone CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have relationships with Shoshone CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Shoshone medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Shoshone CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Shoshone CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
