Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Soquel CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Soquel CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Soquel CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Soquel CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Soquel CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Soquel CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Soquel home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Soquel CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Soquel CA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Soquel CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Soquel CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Soquel health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Soquel CA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Soquel CA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
