Ultrasound Tech Job Description

South Gate CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in South Gate CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

South Gate CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with South Gate CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in South Gate CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local South Gate CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your South Gate home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask South Gate CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the South Gate CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many South Gate CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with South Gate CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the South Gate healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their South Gate CA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the South Gate CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    South Gate, California

South Gate is the 17th largest city in Los Angeles County, California, with 7.4 square miles (19 km2). South Gate is located 7 miles (11 km) southeast of Downtown Los Angeles.[9] It is part of the Gateway Cities region of southeastern Los Angeles County.

While Francisco Lugo was stationed at Mission San Antonio de Padua near Salinas, California, his first California son, Antonio Maria Lugo was born in 1775.[14] That son became Don Antonio Maria Lugo, Spanish aristocrat and soldier, who settled on 30,000 acres (120 km2) of land that encompasses what is now the City of South Gate. In 1810, the King of Spain formally granted the land to Lugo as a reward for his and his father's military service.[14] Rancho San Antonio extended from the low range of hills which separated it from the San Gabriel Valley to the old Dominguez Ranch at its south, and from the eastern boundary of the pueblo of Los Angeles to the San Gabriel River. Lugo also served as mayor of Los Angeles from 1816 to 1819.[15]

A little over a century after the establishment of the Lugo Land Grant, the area at the south gate of the ranch became the City of South Gate. As Don Lugo's family grew, he obtained San Bernardino Rancho and other grants in his children's names.
