Ultrasound Technician Work Description

South Lake Tahoe CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in South Lake Tahoe CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

South Lake Tahoe CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor through South Lake Tahoe CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in South Lake Tahoe CAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local South Lake Tahoe CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your South Lake Tahoe home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask South Lake Tahoe CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the South Lake Tahoe CA area. Certainly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous South Lake Tahoe CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have associations with South Lake Tahoe CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the South Lake Tahoe health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they select will need to be within travelling distance of their South Lake Tahoe CA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the South Lake Tahoe CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Other preferred talents include technical aptitude, the ability to keep collected when confronted by an anxious or angry patient and the ability to converse clearly and compassionately.
