Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Stratford CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Stratford CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Stratford CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Stratford CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Stratford CAAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Stratford CA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Stratford home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Stratford CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Stratford CA area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Stratford CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Stratford CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Stratford health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Stratford CA residence. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Stratford CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
