Sonogram Tech Occupation Summary

Suisun City CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Suisun City CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Suisun City CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Suisun City CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Suisun City CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Suisun City CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Suisun City home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer program you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Suisun City CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Suisun City CA area. Naturally location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Suisun City CA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Suisun City CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Suisun City medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Suisun City CA home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Suisun City CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
