Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Sunset Beach CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Sunset Beach CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Sunset Beach CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Sunset Beach CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Sunset Beach CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Sunset Beach CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Sunset Beach home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Sunset Beach CA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Sunset Beach CA area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Sunset Beach CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Sunset Beach CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Sunset Beach medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Sunset Beach CA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Sunset Beach CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Sunset Beach, California

Sunset Beach is a Huntington Beach beachfront community in Orange County, California. It was established on September 8, 1904[2] and developed as a result of the 1920 discovery of oil in the Huntington Beach Oil Field. The census-designated place of Sunset Beach and its population of 971 as of the 2010 census was annexed by Huntington Beach in 2011.[3] The elevation is 5.3 feet above sea level and the community is stretched out along Pacific Coast Highway bracketed by the ocean and Huntington Harbour.

Sunset Beach was established in 1905 and developed as a result of the 1920 discovery of oil in the Huntington Beach Oil Field.[4] On August 2, 2010 the Huntington Beach city council, in a 5-2 vote, voted to annex Sunset Beach making the community a part of the much larger Huntington Beach. The annexation was to have officially begun in January 2011 but a group of residents filed suit on December 9, 2010 to stop the annexation due to new taxes that would be imposed on them once they become part of Huntington Beach. A hearing for a preliminary injunction was scheduled for January 19, 2011 in Orange County Superior Court.[5] Huntington Beach officially annexed Sunset Beach in August 2011.[6]

The 2010 United States Census[7] reported that Sunset Beach had a population of 971. The population density was 4,919.3 people per square mile (1,899.4/kmĀ²). The racial makeup of Sunset Beach was 863 (88.9%) White, 4 (0.4%) African American, 6 (0.6%) Native American, 42 (4.3%) Asian, 2 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 18 (1.9%) from other races, and 36 (3.7%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 79 persons (8.1%).
