Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Thornton CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Thornton CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Thornton CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Thornton CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whatever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Thornton CAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Thornton CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Thornton home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, make sure that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Thornton CA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Thornton CA area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Thornton CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Thornton CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Thornton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within travelling distance of their Thornton CA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Thornton CA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Joe Thornton

Joseph Eric Thornton (born July 2, 1979) is a Canadian-American professional ice hockey centre and an alternate captain for the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected first overall by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play seven seasons with the club, three as its captain. During the 2005–06 season, he was traded to the Sharks. Splitting the campaign between the two teams, he received the Art Ross and Hart Memorial Trophies as the league's leading point-scorer and most valuable player, respectively.[1]

Thornton's on-ice vision, strength on the puck, deft passing ability and power forward style of play have led to him becoming one of the league's premier top line centres.[2] Listed at 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, he has received the nickname Jumbo Joe. His nickname also comes from Jumbo the elephant who was killed in 1885 in St. Thomas, Ontario, where Thornton was born.[3][4]

Thornton grew up playing minor hockey in his hometown of St. Thomas, Ontario, for the St. Thomas Travelers. He played "AA" hockey for the Travelers and in peewee won an Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship in 1992–93.[5][6] His Bantam year was the first for the newly created "AAA" Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs organization, and Thornton joined the "AAA" Elgin-Middlesex Chiefs of the Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario for the 1993–94 season. The creation of this organization led to the St. Thomas Minor Hockey Association to compete at the "A" level. During his bantam year, he appeared in six games for the Junior B St. Thomas Stars of the Ontario Hockey Association (OHA), scoring eight points in six games as a 14-year-old. The following season, Thornton joined the Stars full-time and reeled off 104 points over 50 games as a 15-year-old,[7] and was subsequently drafted second overall in the 1995 OHL Draft to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds behind Daniel Tkaczuk, who was selected by the Barrie Colts.
