Sonographer Occupation Summary

Thousand Palms CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Thousand Palms CA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Thousand Palms CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Thousand Palms CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Thousand Palms CAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Thousand Palms CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Thousand Palms home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography program you are looking at, check that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Thousand Palms CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Thousand Palms CA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Thousand Palms CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Thousand Palms CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist students and graduates develop professional connections in the Thousand Palms healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Thousand Palms CA home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Thousand Palms CA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
