Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Three Rivers CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Three Rivers CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job duties of a sonogram technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Three Rivers CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges set up through Three Rivers CA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Three Rivers CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Three Rivers CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Three Rivers home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Three Rivers CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Three Rivers CA area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Three Rivers CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are reviewing have associations with Three Rivers CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Three Rivers medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Three Rivers CA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Three Rivers CA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
