Sonogram Tech Job Description

Valley Ford CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Valley Ford CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Valley Ford CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up through Valley Ford CA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Valley Ford CAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Valley Ford CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Valley Ford home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with any sonographer school you are considering, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Valley Ford CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Valley Ford CA area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other factors that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Valley Ford CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are interested in have associations with Valley Ford CA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Valley Ford health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Valley Ford CA home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Valley Ford CA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

It is located on State Route 1 in an area of rolling hills about 75 minutes north of San Francisco by automobile. The village lies just north of the Estero Americano, about 5 mi (8 km) from the Pacific Ocean. It is 7 mi (11 km) north of Dillon Beach, 9 mi (14 km) east of the town of Bodega Bay and 20 mi (32 km) southeast of Jenner. The Estero Americano is protected by the Estero Americano State Marine Recreational Management Area. Like an underwater park, this marine protected area helps conserve ocean wildlife and marine ecosystems.
