Sonographer Job Summary

Vina CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Vina CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Vina CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up with Vina CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in California or whichever state you elect to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Vina CAAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Vina CA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Vina home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than traditional options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Vina CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Vina CA area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Vina CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have partnerships with Vina CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Vina health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Vina CA residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Vina CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
