Westminster CA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have made a decision to pursue an ultrasound technician degree near Westminster CA, it’s time to begin the process of picking a school. First, you have to find the ideal program that will provide the necessary instruction to become a skilled professional. And since a number of states do mandate that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on your residence you may also need to be prepared to pass a certification or licensing examination. So it’s extremely important that you investigate each program so that you can assess and compare your choices. But exactly where does one begin? Most potential students will start by searching for colleges that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Of course cost and location should be taken into account when arriving at a decision, but there are additional critical factors as well. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they sponsor internships. These and additional qualifiers will be addressed more in depth later in this post. But first, let’s discuss what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online training programs that are offered.

Sonogram Tech Work Description

Westminster CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Westminster CA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Westminster CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Westminster CA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in California or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Westminster CAAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Westminster CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Westminster home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Westminster CA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Westminster CA area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Westminster CA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Westminster CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Westminster medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Westminster CA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Westminster CA area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.

    Westminster, California

Westminster is a city in northern Orange County, California. It is known for a large number of Vietnamese refugees who immigrated to the city during the 1980s,[9] settling largely in the area now officially named Little Saigon, and the city is unofficially known as the "capital" of overseas Vietnamese with 36,058 Vietnamese Americans and at 40.2% (2010), the highest municipal prevalence of Vietnamese Americans.

Westminster is landlocked and bordered by Seal Beach on the west, by Garden Grove on the north and east, and by Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley on the south. Santa Ana, the county seat of Orange County, is right next to Westminster on the east but is divided by a small part of Garden Grove. Westminster borders the unincorporated area of Midway City, except for a small portion where Midway City borders Huntington Beach on the south.

Westminster was founded in 1870 by Rev. Lemuel Webber as a Presbyterian temperance colony. The name is derived from the Westminster Assembly of 1643, which established the basic tenets of the Presbyterian faith. During the early years of its history, farmers refused to harvest grapes since they associated grapes with alcohol.
