Sonographer Work Summary

Winchester CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Winchester CA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Winchester CA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools set up through Winchester CA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Winchester CAAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Winchester CA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Winchester home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than traditional options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Winchester CA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Winchester CA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Winchester CA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Winchester CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist students and graduates form professional connections in the Winchester medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Winchester CA home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Winchester CA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family emergencies.
