Ultrasound Tech Job Summary

Wofford Heights CA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Wofford Heights CA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Wofford Heights CA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Wofford Heights CA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in California or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Wofford Heights CAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Wofford Heights CA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Wofford Heights home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Schools

Questions to ask Wofford Heights CA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Wofford Heights CA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification also. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Wofford Heights CA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Wofford Heights CA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Wofford Heights medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with California healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will have to be within travelling distance of their Wofford Heights CA residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Wofford Heights CA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
