Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Aguilar CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Aguilar CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Aguilar CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Aguilar CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Programs

So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Aguilar CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Aguilar home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Aguilar CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Aguilar CO area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Aguilar CO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Aguilar CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist students and graduates establish professional connections in the Aguilar healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Aguilar CO home. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Aguilar CO area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
