Sonographer Occupation Description

Allenspark CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Allenspark CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Allenspark CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Allenspark CO hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you decide to practice in.

student attending online sonography class in Allenspark COAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Allenspark CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Allenspark home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Allenspark CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Allenspark CO area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Allenspark CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Allenspark CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Allenspark healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Allenspark CO residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Allenspark CO area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
