Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Clark CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Clark CO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Clark CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Clark CO clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Clark COAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Clark CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Clark home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less costly than traditional options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any sonography program you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Clark CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Clark CO area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Clark CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Clark CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Clark healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Clark CO residence. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Clark CO area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Marcus Clark & Co.

The store started in the Sydney suburb of Newtown on 1 February 1883 as a two-window draper shop,[2] and soon opened new stores in Marrickville and Bondi Junction. In 1896 a store closer to the city was opened on Broadway on the corner of Harris Street near Railway Square. It had a different concept and was stocked with less expensive wares and was called Bon Marche after the Paris department store. The store succeeded and in 1909 a larger building was constructed on the site to a design by Arthur Anderson. The building is now part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE.

Marcus Clark & Co made arguably its biggest and most lasting mark on Sydney in 1906 when the James Nangle-designed Central Square building, known as the flat-iron building, was erected on the corner of George and Pitt Streets, Railway Square, on the site of an early toll-gate. For all visitors entering the city from the south it was an impressive sight: a landmark nine-storey structure of 150 feet in height, the tallest in Sydney at the time.

Henry Marcus Clark’s early experience in Newtown may have alerted him to the advantages of regional and suburban retailing. Although a number of retailers opened branches outside the city after World War II, Marcus Clark & Co’s growth was unprecedented: the 1915 Sands Directory listed stores in Newtown, North Sydney, Armidale, Dubbo, Goulburn, Gunnedah, Inverell, Lismore, Lithgow, Narrabri, Newcastle, Nowra, Tamworth and Wollongong. Many of these country locations were actually modest sized ‘sample rooms’ rather than large stores. However, they could still provide customers with personalized service and competed directly with city retailers like Anthony Hordern & Sons which made large profits from the lucrative mail order trade. Country customers could order goods and have them shipped from Marcus Clark & Co’s city stores, conveniently located next to the parcels post office at Central station.
