Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Climax CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Climax CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Climax CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Climax CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Climax COAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Climax CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Climax home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Climax CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Climax CO area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Climax CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Climax CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Climax medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Climax CO residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Climax CO area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
