Dacono CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Dacono CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Dacono CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Dacono CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Dacono COAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dacono CO outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Dacono home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Dacono CO ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dacono CO area. Obviously location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Dacono CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have partnerships with Dacono CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Dacono health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Dacono CO home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Dacono CO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
