Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Henderson CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Henderson CO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Henderson CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize with Henderson CO clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Henderson COAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Henderson CO hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Henderson home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Henderson CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Henderson CO area. Certainly location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Henderson CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have partnerships with Henderson CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Henderson health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Henderson CO home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Henderson CO area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
