Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Hoehne CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Hoehne CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Hoehne CO ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools organize with Hoehne CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Hoehne COAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Hoehne CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Hoehne home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with every sonography college you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Hoehne CO ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Hoehne CO area. Obviously location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Hoehne CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have associations with Hoehne CO hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Hoehne medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Hoehne CO home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Hoehne CO area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Hoehne, Colorado

Hoehne was founded by German immigrant William Hoehne in 1859. He is credited with founding the Hoehne Ditch Company and introducing the first mill and threshing machine into the area.[3] William Hoehne farmed 1,000 acres, planting strawberries, apples, and cherries. Hoehne is still a farming community, but the focus has shifted from fruits to alfalfa and grass hay.

The population of Hoehne today is less than 100 people. But during its heyday, the town boasted a hotel, a train depot called “Hoehnes,” a blacksmith, a Catholic church, and several stores. The train depot was retired in 1967 and was moved twice - the second time to its current location in Texas Creek, CO, where it was restored to its original condition.[4] The Hoehnes train depot sign is still visible today at the original depot location.
