Kiowa CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Kiowa CO hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Offered

Kiowa CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Kiowa CO hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Colorado or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Kiowa COAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Kiowa CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Kiowa home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less costly than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Kiowa CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Kiowa CO area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Kiowa CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have relationships with Kiowa CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Kiowa health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Kiowa CO home. Students who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Kiowa CO area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
