They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in New Castle CO clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

New Castle CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through New Castle CO hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Colorado or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in New Castle COAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Castle CO outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your New Castle home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every sonographer college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask New Castle CO ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the New Castle CO area. Certainly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and educational materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many New Castle CO health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with New Castle CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the New Castle health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their New Castle CO home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the New Castle CO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
