You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Palisade CO area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Palisade CO health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Palisade CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Palisade healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Palisade CO home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Palisade CO area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
