They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Parshall CO clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Parshall CO ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Parshall CO clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Colorado or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Parshall COAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Parshall CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Parshall home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography program you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Parshall CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Parshall CO area. Clearly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Parshall CO employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Parshall CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Parshall health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Parshall CO home. Those who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Parshall CO area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
