Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Rangely CO ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Rangely CO hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous schools organize through Rangely CO hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Colorado or whichever state you decide to work in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Rangely COAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Rangely CO hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Rangely home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Rangely CO ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rangely CO area. Obviously location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Rangely CO employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound technician schools you are interested in have partnerships with Rangely CO clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional connections in the Rangely health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Colorado healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Rangely CO home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Rangely CO area, check that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
