Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Cornwall Bridge CT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Cornwall Bridge CT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Cornwall Bridge CT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges organize through Cornwall Bridge CT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Connecticut or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Cornwall Bridge CTAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Cornwall Bridge CT hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cornwall Bridge home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, check that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Cornwall Bridge CT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cornwall Bridge CT area. Certainly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Cornwall Bridge CT employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are assessing have relationships with Cornwall Bridge CT clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can assist graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Cornwall Bridge healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Connecticut healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within driving distance of their Cornwall Bridge CT home. Students who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Cornwall Bridge CT area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
